Navigation for beginners Full-day course
Our full-day course provides a comprehensive foundation in outdoor navigation. It covers everything you need to begin planning routes, make safe decisions, and navigate independently in the countryside.
This course is an excellent stepping stone if you’re looking to progress towards an outdoor leadership qualification or simply want the confidence to explore more adventurous terrain.
Workshop content
- Introduction to maps, the national grid system, and recognising map symbols.
- Taking a grid reference
- Identifying access restrictions and rights of way
- Compass features
- Measuring distance, timing and pacing a section of a route
- How to plan, follow, and lead a route.
- Following a bearing
- Emergency procedures
- Nutrition and clothing choices
- Using technology to navigate
This workshop usually runs from 0930 - 1700
We run this course both at weekends and midweek throughout the year. Who is this course for?
- Outdoor instructors
- Aspiring outdoor leaders (including those working towards the Lowland Leader Award and similar)
- Adults supporting young people on the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
- Families keen to explore the outdoors safely and confidently
- Anyone wanting to plan safe and appropriate routes to follow in the outdoors.
What we provide:
- Maps
- Compasses
- Navigation tools
- Pens for making notes
- Headtorches (for night navigation)
- First aid equipment
- Spare outdoor clothing
All our courses are delivered outside, where the learning can be contextualised and put into practice straight away.
There is no classroom element of our courses so come prepared to be outside for the duration of your time with us.
We try to plan our training routes around refreshment and toilet facilities but at times you may need to use the outdoor facilities so come prepared to leave no trace! What you need to bring:
- Enthusiasm
- Day backpack
- Appropriate clothing (including waterproofs and at least one extra layer in a bag)
- Robust trainers / walking shoes or a set of walking boots (be prepared for mud and slippery surfaces all year round).
- Lunch / drink / snacks for the duration of your time with us
- Any medication you may need whilst you are with us (including asthma pump, EpiPen, insulin, etc)
- Cash / card if we stop for a drink during the course.
- Hat / gloves / sunscreen if required
Qualification
Although this is not an accredited course, we are happy to provide you with a certificate of attendance for CPD purposes.
